    ICANN (the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) is a huge topic, and we can only scratch the surface here.  In selecting the materials I'm asking you to read today, I want simply to introduce ICANN and to focus on a single one of the issues it has faced:  whether, when and how to recognize new generic top level domains, such as .UNION and .INFO, to compete with esisting domains such as .COM, .ORG, and .NET.  Please read the following:
