PROFILE:
Professor Schenk has been on the Wayne State faculty since
1966, serving as associate dean in 1973-74 and 1975-76. While
he has written widely in the field of taxation, he has received
the most acclaim for his work on the value-added tax (V.A.T.).
He wrote a book on the British value-added tax and during
1986-88 served as reporter to draft a model value-added tax
statute for the American Bar Association (A.B.A.) Section
of Taxation. He chaired the A.B.A. Tax Section Committee on
Value-Added Tax. He wrote a book on the Canadian goods and
services tax in 1993. He is the U.S. correspondent for the
V.A.T. Monitor (international bureau of fiscal documentation).
He also lectures frequently on corporate tax matters, and
is the author of a chapter in the book Closely Held Corporations
(1996). He has served as participating professor at Harvard
Law School, as visiting professor at the Iowa and San Diego
law schools, and as adjunct professor at two Canadian law
schools Osgoode Hall Law School of York University
and the University of Windsor Faculty of Law. He taught on
numerous occasions for the Ministry of Finance in the Republic
of China.
Professor
Schenk teaches Taxation, Business Planning, Consumption-Based
Tax and Accounting for Lawyers. He received the distinguished
faculty award from the Michigan Association of Governing Boards
of State Universities (1996); the President's Award for Excellence
in Teaching, W.S.U. (1995); the law alumni's Donald Gordon
Award for Teaching Excellence (1983 and 1986); and was co-recipient
of the students' Best Teacher Award (1986-87). Professor Schenk
was professor-in-residence in the Office of the Chief Counsel
of the Internal Revenue Service in Washington, DC. (1984-85).
