Course Description:

The course will examine the response of the legal system to complex issues raised by domestic violence. The historical and social context of domestic violence, as well as the dynamics of abusive relationships, will be considered. Among other topics, the course will cover criminal law issues (domestic assault, stalking, homicide, self-defense, orders of protection); tort litigation against perpetrators and/or the state; child welfare system issues (the overlap between domestic violence and child maltreatment; failure to protect); family law issues (custody, visitation).
